Change your preferences

If you don't like AutoCat default preferences, you can change them by selecting 'Preferences...' from the Edit menu (Mac OS 9) or the AutoCat menu (Mac OS X).

    Quit after cataloging

To force AutoCat to quit after cataloging, check this box.

    Eject after cataloging

To automatically eject a disk after cataloging, check this box. This allows you to use AutoCat instead of the Trash to eject your disks.

    Smart progress bar

To see a smart progress bar and the number of items remaining when AutoCat is cataloging, check this box. You’ll see how long the process is taking, but AutoCat is a bit slower in this mode.

    Catalog custom icons

If you want AutoCat catalogs custom icons of your files (your catalog will look nicer), check this box. This will slow down the cataloging process, and your catalog will be slightly bigger.

    Catalog comments

If you want AutoCat catalogs comments from the Info boxes in the Finder, check this box. This will slow down the cataloging process, and your catalog will be slightly bigger.

    Treat StuffIt™ archives like folders

To treat StuffIt™ archives like folders, check this box. AutoCat will look inside archives and show all their contents in your catalogs. AutoCat will use a folder with a special icon and will add a '•' symbol at the end of the names of the files inside an archive.

    Don't scan levels deeper than...

To prevent AutoCat to scan deeply in your folders, check this box. AutoCat will catalog only folders with a hierarchical level lower than the number in the edit field on the right. In the field on the right, enter here a hierarchical level for the volumes you catalog.
For example, if you have files included in a folder, which is itself included in another folder, and you type 1 as the level, your files will not be cataloged because they belong to level 2.

Copy files if their size is lower than...

To copy files with a size lower than the one indicated in the edit field on the right, check this box. AutoCat usually create aliases of the files it scans, but you can choose to copy small files instead. Enter the size in K.

    Destination

To select a new folder in which AutoCat will store the catalogs, click this button. Your old catalogs will stay in the old folder. You can move them form the Finder into the new selected folder. You can also move you catalog (if you don't want to select another one) and AutoCat will automatically find its new location, as long as yoo didn't move it to another disk.

Then, catalog your disk with AutoCat.
