ChemDuet Installer allows you to easily install, update, or remove ChemDuet on your iPod. You should update ChemDuet on your iPod after you register ChemDuet, if you change the units you've selected to include on the iPod, or if you download a new version of ChemDuet.

You need an iPod with a screen and a click wheel: 3rd Generation, 4th Generation, iPod with video (5th Generation), iPod Classic, iPod nano, iPod mini, iPod photo, or iPod U2 are all compatible. The iPod shuffle is not compatible (no screen!) The iPod touch and iPhone are not compatible with this version of ChemDuet (no click wheel).

Installation

1. Plug your iPod into your Mac. (Disk use must be enabled. You can enable disk use on your iPod from iTunes. See your iPod documentation for more information.)

2. Run the ChemDuet Installer application. If you have not registered ChemDuet, then only certain options are available. Specifically, only the datasets in the red Physical group can be installed, plus the orange Isotopes dataset. The glossary and most of the visual tables also cannot be installed. If you'd like to enable installation of all datasets and the glossary, click the red-outlined "Register ChemDuet" button and follow the instructions.

3. Choose options (or register to enable all options). You can adjust the units of many of the properties by clicking Customize Units. When you're done, click Install ChemDuet on iPod. If Install ChemDuet on iPod is disabled, you need to enable disk use on your iPod using iTunes.

You should only choose the Monopolize iPod Notes option if you do not plan to use your iPod's Notes function for anything besides ChemDuet. If you choose Monopolize iPod Notes Function, no other notes you may have installed, or other programs may have installed, will be visible on the iPod! It is possible (though unlikely) that choosing this option may overwrite other installed notes (e.g. notes not from ChemDuet). More likely they will just be hidden until you reinstall ChemDuet with this option turned off.

4. When prompted, eject your iPod. Use iTunes or the Finder to eject your iPod.

5. When your iPod is disconnected, you may access ChemDuet under the Extras > Notes > menu on your iPod.

6. The ChemDuet Installer application is your link to ChemDuet on your iPod. So don't delete it now that you've completed the installation! You can put it anywhere on your hard drive. Run it again when you want to update the units on your iPod, or after you register to add more features to the iPod ChemDuet. (See Updating below.)

Using ChemDuet on your iPod

From the iPod main menu, choose: Extras > Notes > ChemDuet

The first time you select Notes after installing or updating ChemDuet, or in certain other circumstances, the iPod will take a moment to scan all the newly loaded items. This will take a few moments. Subsequently opening the Notes is much faster.

ChemDuet presents you with several ways to find an element. You can choose to view the elements by atomic number, period, group (IUPAC numbering system), symbol (alphabetical), or alphabetical. Once you get to a menu which lists individual elements, choose an element to access its information. Once you've selected an element, you can scroll through a long list of atomic properties--well, actually the length of the list depends on which property datasets you chose to install, and whether or not you have registered...but the list can be quite extensive if you've registered and installed all the datasets. Towards the end of the list are additional options to list natural isotopes, or to read about the discovery and uses of the element ("Miscellaneous").

Although you can't change the units displayed on the iPod from the iPod itself, you can always go back to the ChemDuet Installer on your Mac, select new units via Customize Units, and update the iPod (see Updating, below).

The other option on the ChemDuet menu is About (if you've registered) or Want More? (if you have not registered). About tells you more about ChemDuet, and how to register/purchase the full version. Also, if you have installed the Glossary (registered users only), it appears in this area.

Updating to a new version of ChemDuet

(changing installed options, installing registered version, or installing a new version of ChemDuet)

1. Plug your iPod into your Mac.

2. Run the ChemDuet Installer application.

3. Choose options (or register to enable all options), and then click the "Install ChemDuet on iPod" button. If Install ChemDuet on iPod is disabled, you need to enable disk use on your iPod using iTunes.

4. ChemDuet installer will replace any existing installation with your new installation and new options. You do not need to remove ChemDuet from your iPod before reinstalling it.

5. When prompted, eject your iPod. Use iTunes or the Finder to eject your iPod.

6. When your iPod is disconnected, you may access ChemDuet under the Extras > Notes > menu on your iPod.

Removing ChemDuet from your iPod

2. Run the ChemDuet Installer application.

3. Click the "Remove ChemDuet from iPod" button. If Remove ChemDuet from iPod is disabled, you need to enable disk use on your iPod using iTunes.
